BASIC SEO
An introduction to basic SEO
Welcome to
BasicSEO.co.uk Here is a step-by-step guide to basic SEO that you can read through and
implement onto your website(s) where applicable. I will try to
cut out most of the jargon (wherever possible), use examples and explain the
principles in the most simple of terms - that way, no one will
get confused.
What does SEO stand for?
SEO is an acronym for the term Search Engine Optimisation (of course that's
'optimization' if you spell American style). Also the person who
implements the optimisation on your website happens to be
referred to as an 'SEO'. The SEO that we are most interested in
here is the type that you can implement yourself without needing
to employ an expensive SEO company to do it for you.
Everyone has to learn from the beginning which is why I opted
for the name Basic SEO. There's not much point talking
about canonical urls, htaccess or 302 redirects if you don't
know the basics - so we'll move onto those subjects a bit later
on. If you already know a thing or two about SEO then you might
be interested in participating by submitting some SEO articles
or offering feedback on the sites content.
I have been building and optimising websites for about 4 years
and provide SEO assistance if and where I can on several forums
across the web. It's interesting to see people going round in
circles debating the same issues over and over again, so I
thought I'd share some SEO tips with you and give an insight
into my own thoughts (and experiences) as the site progresses.
What is SEO?
Well, in the words of Wikipedia: "Search engine optimization
(SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of
traffic to a website from search engines via "natural"
("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted
keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search
results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit
that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search,
including image search, local search, and industry-specific
vertical search engines.
As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO
considers how search algorithms work and what people search for.
SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and
structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search
engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other,
more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a
site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine
robots, and making the site more appealing to users."
In translation - SEO is getting more people to your website, via
the search engines, by building better webpages that include all
the key ingredients that search engines use to rank websites in
order of importance/relevance.
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a necessity for any website.
It can get quite complicated with all the speculation and
mis-information that is available on the internet, knowing what
to trust and what not to, but one thing is sure - only YOU
control what is on your website. If you can make the most of
that then you are already one step ahead of the competition and
sure enough visitors will find your website and either purchase
your products or utilise your services.... so here we go!
